Two men were arrested in Cameroon in 2011 for "appearing gay" and were just recently released. Apparently it is illegal to be gay in Cameroon, and because these men were seen dressing like females and drinking feminine drinks at a bar, they were arrested and sent to trial. The judge declared them guilty on the grounds that "the way they dressed, the way they spoke, and the fact that they drank Bailey's Irish Cream proved they were gay". That is unbelievable. First off, how is being gay a crime? Deciding who others love does not make you a better person or give you real power, it is just sad. Second, I can't believe there is actually a court system created in this way. And third, how sad is it that today in the U.S. so many states are not only accepting gays, but also allowing gay marriage while hateful crimes like arresting two men for no reason goes unpunished. The other day I was speaking with someone and they asked me what one thing is that I would like to see happen in my life time to our world, and I said, I want to see gay marriage legal everywhere because I believe everyone should be able to love whoever they want to love. I want to see this happen, and I believe that it CAN happen, but first places like Cameroon need to get with the program and crawl out from their moronic rock they have been hiding under while society has evolved.
This is seems outrageous to me, it's crazy to think that a court could charge a person for "appearing gay" especially when part of that appearance is what type of alcohol they were drinking. This seems incredibly unjust.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with you Steph, this makes me lose faith in human kind. To me it completely boggles my mind how much people even care about who other people marry. I don't understand why it is such a big deal for two people of the same sex to get married, maybe i've just grown up in an accepting household but i can't even understand why people get so upset with that idea. I believe that people can't chose who they fall in love with, whether it's male or female. and i don't think it is fair for other people to try to decide who other people fall in love with or are "allowed" to fall in love with.
I'm with you, i want to see gay marriage legal everyhwere, as i think it very well should be.
I think this is unfair. I agree that being gay should not be a crime and punished for. Also, the reasons why they accused them is kind of ridiculous. Would they have accused a women who dressed and spoke like a guy and was a heavy drinker?? I don't understand how the drinks they drank were one of the reasons for accusing them because that is a matter of preference. Also, I don't think I saw this on the article, but it makes me wonder who accused them. The workers at the bar or the people around them? Do everyone in Cameroon believe that gay people should be punished or is it just the law that is making them believe that way?
