Rice yield could drop to 40% by 2100 due to increased arsenic contamination

Rice yield could drop to 40% by 2100 due to increased arsenic contamination

  •  Researchers predict that the rising global temperature will cause rice yield to drop to 40% by 2100 due to increased arsenic contamination.
  • The study found that as temperatures rise, the soil of flooded paddies where rice is grown releases greater amounts of arsenic, which is then absorbed by the growing rice.
  •  If the temperature rises by the estimated 5 degrees Celsius, 2 billion people who depend on rice for nutrients would no longer have access to the grain.
  •  Scientists behind the study say they are “optimistic” that their research will allow communities to develop rice that adapts to the planet’s warming temperature.

All rice contains some level of arsenic
The climate is warming, causing researchers to investigate temperature’s impact on a grain that makes its way onto almost every household’s dining room table around the world: rice. There is already evidence of arsenic contaminating rice products, but researchers at Stanford University found that the contamination could lead to a drop of 40% in rice yield by 2100 if the temperature continues to rise at its current rate.

Rice is often grown in flooded fields called paddies. As the paddies flood, arsenic, which is naturally found in most soil and sediment, is loosened into the water and absorb by the roots of growing rice plants. As global temperatures rise, the soil containing the arsenic is predicted to change, causing arsenic to absorb easier into the already sensitive rice paddies. If the temperature rises by 5 degrees Celsius by the year 2100, rice could contain twice as much toxic arsenic as it does today.

Plants that have absorbed arsenic have decreased growth and are unable to produce the same amount of nutrients. If arsenic levels in rice double, researchers predict that rice production will drop causing a significant amount of the population to no longer have access to the grain.

"By the time we get to 2100, we're estimated to have approximately 10 billion people, so that would mean we have 5 billion people dependent on rice, and 2 billion who would not have access to the calories they would normally need," said co-author Scott Fendorf, the Terry Huffington Professor in Earth system science at Stanford University's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences. "We have to be aware of these challenges that are coming so we can be ready to adapt."
As rice paddies flood, arsenic in the soil rises into the water and is absorbed by the rice
In order to prepare for these challenges, researchers conducted an experiment in the rice-growing region of California. Using a greenhouse, which allowed them to control for temperature, carbon dioxide concentration and arsenic levels in the soil, the researchers grew a variety of medium-grain rice. They discovered that microorganisms found in soil destabilize more of the arsenic in increased temperatures, which, as predicted led to greater amounts of toxins in the water the rice adsorbed.

Most foods contain arsenic, which is why researchers aren’t as concerned about its presence as they are the level of contamination. In large quantities it can cause skin lesions, cancer, aggravation of lung disease, and in some cases, death.

While the outcome of the experiment may seem like a cause for alarm, the researchers take a more optimistic approach.

"The good news is that given past advances in terms of the global community's ability to breed varieties that can adapt to new conditions, along with revisions to soil management, I'm optimistic we can get around the problems observed in our study," Fendorf said. "I'm also optimistic that as we continue to shine a light on the threats resulting from a 5 degree Celsius change, society will adopt practices to ensure we never reach that degree of warming."

This makes me lose faith in human kind...

http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/09/world/africa/cameroon-gay-men-freed/index.html?hpt=hp_t3

Two men were arrested in Cameroon in 2011 for "appearing gay" and were just recently released. Apparently it is illegal to be gay in Cameroon, and because these men were seen dressing like females and drinking feminine drinks at a bar, they were arrested and sent to trial. The judge declared them guilty on the  grounds that "the way they dressed, the way they spoke, and the fact that they drank Bailey's Irish Cream proved they were gay". That is unbelievable. First off, how is being gay a  crime? Deciding who others love does not make you a better person or give you real power, it is just sad. Second, I can't believe there is actually a court system created in this way. And third, how sad is it that today in the U.S. so many states are not only accepting gays, but also allowing gay marriage while hateful crimes like arresting two men for no reason goes unpunished. The other day I was speaking with someone and they asked me what one thing is that I would like to see happen in my life time to our world, and I said, I want to see gay marriage legal everywhere because I believe everyone should be able to love whoever they want to love. I want to see this happen, and I believe that it CAN happen, but first places like Cameroon need to get with the program and crawl out from their moronic rock they have been hiding under while society has evolved.

America is killing us

http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/09/health/international-health-report/index.html?hpt=hp_c1

At the beginning of the year our class talked about how no matter what is and is not accurate, it is common thought that America is the greatest country in the world. I have always been a strong believer that it is not. Now, I don't have another country in mind, but I have always disagreed because of Americas healthcare  and because there are so many ignorant people walking around complaining about how out of shape and pathetic they are without choosing to do anything about it. This article discusses how Americans' have the shortest life expectancy out of  Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Why is this? Well some would say it is only because of healthcare and the ludicrous price of it, but I feel it is more due to the fact that the U.S. has found more and more ways to make fast food cheap and healthy food more expensive, and with the poverty line changing the way it has been, it is so hard for people to make healthy choices. And I don't blame those people, BUT the wealthy/middle class who chooses to eat bad food and then sit on their butt while they take in lard and almost-meats; that is their fault. And it can't be questioned why Americans are dying young. While other countries are dying from starvation we are literally dying from over eating. So is the U.S. the best country in the world? I think not.

Connecticut Shooting

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/12/18/police-find-no-evidence-connecticut-gunman-was-on-medication/

This article discusses the shooting at a Connecticut school, in which twenty children and six adults were shot and killed. It discuesses that there is no evidence that the murderer was on medication that could have prevented him from having the desire to kill. But i don't understadn how that is even an issue for discussion. This is not a matter of mental sickness, in myopinion. Obviously this man had thought through his plan. He did not walk into the class room and just shoot randomly. He executed the children, walking around the room and making sure that eah child was dead. This was well calculated and he was prepared. Although the shooter may have been unstable, though, I don't see how that is something to headline. I feel like because people are too fragile. They are always searching for an explanation as to why someone would do something so horrible, because with out an answer they have nothing but the fear that this will happen again. And it will. I'm sure it will. There will always be horrible people in the world. And THAT is what we should be focusing on. We should be working on a way to stop bullying, giving children more comfortable lives, because if we continue on the way we have been, there will always be people out there that don't feel like anyone cares to make a difference in their lives so they think, why should they care about others. Now, I am not sure if that was the thought process of this disgusting man, but I do feel like in our society we ignore the things that could most easily be changed to help prevent stuff like that from happening. Each time there is a bombing or a shooting, everyone acts so suprised, like "how could this possibly happen?!" MAYBE it is because after a while we forget about bad events until something new comes along. We need to stop making excuses and actually remember the bad things so we can prevent more from happening.

Police officer? Maybe not.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-man-charged-with-posing-as-officer-to-block-traffic-20121117,0,5141820.story

Can someone please explain to me why there are so many stupid people in the world. In the article above it talks about how a man stopped traffic while impersonating a Chicago police officer. When actual cops showed up he explained that he was just doing his job, but the officers didn't believe him. He got charged with " false impersonation of a police officer and public safety organization as well as obstruction of traffic by a motorist and operating a motor vehicle without insurance. A judge ordered him held in lieu of $10,000 bail." So my question is why. It was clear from the start that he would not get away with this, so what made him think this was a good idea?! Aside from that, how scary is it that there are people running around pretending to be police officers and getting away with it to some extent?! That's pretty worrisome. The man had handcuffs and police sticks in his car. He could have easily confused someone into thinking he was an officer and then abducted them. And if not him, then someone else who has his same plan. It really makes you feel like you can't trust anyone, because with things like this happening, how can you know if anyone is who they say they are. That's a pretty scary thought.

Man dies after being hit by semi-truck

Noway! Really? A man was killed after being hit by a semi-truck? SHOCKING!... I'm sorry, but I don't understand the news today. Obviously I feel awful for the person that died. That is horrible! But is this really what news has come to? Clearly if a man is hit by a semi-truck they are going to die, and frankly there are more important deaths that should be published in the news. So why did the Chicago Tribune choose this death to publicize? I have no idea. Maybe because the news thinks the public is too stupid to realize that they are only writing pointless articles to fill space. If the article had been about a man being hit by a semi-truck and living then I would understand, but this accident had the sad but predictable outcome. Aside from that, this news had no purpose. I thought the news was out there to inform. But all this did was tell a story. There was no way to prevent this from happening. The man was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. If the man or the truck driver had somehow caused this and the news was publishing this article in order to make sure people are more safe then at least that would make sense. I just don't understand how this is news. People die everyday, some from worse things than being hit by a semi, so no offense, but what makes his death so special?

Freedom of speech... or just plain wrong?

Recently I was with my friends and one of them mentioned something that happened a few years ago. Now, I realize this is not new information, but it was news to me. I guess that a man had self-published a book on Amazon.com called "The Pedophile's Guide". The context of the book is pretty clear in the title. This book explains the "proper" methods to being a pedophile in order to not only please yourself, but also the child involved. Obviously the book got loads of bad press. How could a book like this one be published in a place where pedophilia is illegal? The author argued that many children enjoy sexual activity. He would know. He was raped at a very young age. If you are a normal human being, then like me, you should be disgusted! But, then you and I have to realize that disgusting or not, the author of this book has rights. The Constitution advocates for "freedom of speech", and because Amazon.com does not censor the items that are put on their site, the author has his full right to write and sell such a book. (Thankfully though, Amazon.com finally made the choice to yank the book from the site.)

This issue, is not a new one. In 1989 a book titled "The Anarchist Cookbook" was published in the United States. This book explained how to make bomb and how to cause general mayhem. To this day, that book is one of the most controversial.
