This article talks about a shooting that took place at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post. Two people were killed and one was wounded. I don't understand it. Obviously murder is bad, but I would like to have some hope for the human race in thinking that no sane person would kill another human being (they must be messed up in the head), but when their is someone going around targeting a specific group, than they are not sick, they are just awful people. Aside from that, it blows my mind how little respect veterans receive. There is no draft in the U.S. and yet these people choose to go risk their lives for the common good. What happens to them in returned? They come back from the war to find themself homeless or worse, the victim to a murderous rampage.
This story touches on so many issues... gun ownership, access to weapons, the treatment of veterans in the US. We are facing a serious crisis in the US when it comes to the treatment vets receive and if we do not take steps to correct this could face some potentially dramatic outcomes. In addition, the idea of these mass shootings is scary to anyone. The question is how do we stop them? How do we confront this issue while still protecting the rights of others that will not use weapons for evil?
ReplyDeleteI think there are two ways to look at that question. I feel like a lot of people are ignorant about what the veterans give up in order to protect the American people. There is a lack of respect because although Americans are patriotic, they believe more in the ideas and the colors red, white, and blue, rather than actually realizing what work has to be put in by mothers, uncles, brothers, cousins, in order for the U.S. to be the way it is. I also think that people blame the veterans for the war. Obviously the people that choose to fight are not doing so because they think killing others is enjoyable, they are doing it for protection, but I think people see volunteers as just another reason for the United States to keep fighting.
